Strength Training for Seniors: Redefining What’s Possible

Feb 18, 2026 | Active Aging, Case Studies, Consulting, Management

One of our greatest passions at Active Wellness is helping members feel their best at every stage of life. Nowhere is this more evident than at our Active Wellness Center at Kruse Woods, where 87% of the membership consists of older adults.

In 2025, personal training at this location grew by 50%, with nearly all new clients being over age 65. This growth wasn’t accidental; it’s the result of a proven formula: Expert Consulting, Strategic Wellness Oversight, and Data-Driven Programming.

Through our partner sites, we’ve learned that for the active aging population, “bigger” isn’t always “better.” Kruse Woods is a relatively small facility, requiring our team to get creative in building an intentional environment for member engagement and our programming.

The Visibility Effect: When members see peers their own age getting stronger, it naturally inspires them to invest in their own health. We design spaces that foster high-touch engagement and remove the “intimidation factor” of traditional gyms.

The Power of Assessment: Making Health Tangible

Our wellness expertise ensures every member has a roadmap to optimal health, starting with a comprehensive assessment protocol.

Functional assessments to measure strength, aerobic capacity, mobility, agility and balance are central to our onboarding process, and we use InBody scans to provide tangible data on body composition. This assessment isn’t just a baseline; it’s a powerful engagement tool. When a member sees their muscle mass increasing, their functional capacity improving, and their “BioAge” dropping, they stop “exercising” and start “training.”

Fitness Expertise in Action: Bridging the Gap to Strength

Effective wellness programming means ensuring that technology like EGYM is a bridge, not a destination. Our trainers are deeply experienced in progressing seniors from the safety of a circuit to the functional power of free weights.

We are clear in our philosophy:

  • EGYM Circuit: Provides the foundation of coordination, safety, and consistent tension.
  • Free Weight Training: Offers the “real-world” carryover needed for independence — travel, lifting groceries, gardening, or picking up grandchildren.

A Culture That Raises the Bar

In the sites we support, we’ve noticed a shift: the bins of 2–3 lb weights are collecting dust while members opt for heavier dumbbells. Our programming intentionally moves members into higher-intensity strength and power phases to combat age-related muscle loss.

Real-World Outcomes We Celebrate:

  • Strength: Ted is 83 and deadlifts well above his bodyweight. At 74, Glenn is performing multiple strict pull-ups from a dead hang.
  • Capability: Gretchen is 74 and was able to carry a 30-pound backpack through the Alpine Lakes Wilderness while on a family camping trip.
  • Independence: Several members who take our LIFT & Balance class shared that their balance has improved so much that they can now get dressed without sitting down.
